At Gonville Academy, we believe that a good foundation of religious education supports children in their personal development and an understanding of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural questions that surface in their lives. It promotes respect and open-mindedness towards others with different faiths and beliefs of the people who surround them in the diverse and multicultural city and country they live in.
In addition, it encourages children to develop their sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection. We ensure that children are taught key knowledge about the main world religions as well as non-religious belief systems, in a creative way, to ensure that they are equipped to talk about RE sensitively and respectfully. The principal aim of RE is to engage children in an enquiry approach where they can develop an understanding and appreciation for the expression of beliefs, cultural practices and influence of principle religions and worldviews in the local, national and wider global community.
PSHE (including RSE):
Our PSHE (personal, social, health and economic) curriculum ensures all of our children develop the skills and knowledge to be successful in today’s world; to be safe and healthy individuals and understand their place in the community, and be confident and certain in their right to be heard.
As well as covering the statutory content of the RSE curriculum, our PSHE curriculum covers economic wellbeing, careers and enterprise education, as well as education for personal safety, including assessing and managing risk. This, alongside Global Citizenship and P4C in particular, enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It helps them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
